The Key Laboratory of Specialty Fiber Optics and Optical Access Networks, Shanghai University
The Key Laboratory of Specialty Fiber Optics and Optical Access Networks, affiliated with Shanghai University, is a Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education and a National Key Laboratory Cultivation Base jointly supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Shanghai Municipal Government. The Laboratory is dedicated to advancing frontier research in next-generation information technologies and addressing the strategic needs of China's optical communications, Internet of Things (IoT), and high-speed broadband communication industries.
Building upon Shanghai University's long-standing research strengths in specialty fiber optics, optical access networks, optical fiber communications, and fiber optic sensing technologies, the Laboratory has established an integrated research framework centered on specialty fiber technologies and their applications in optical fiber sensing networks and optical access networks. Its research combines fundamental theory, technological innovation, engineering development, and practical applications, forming a comprehensive platform for scientific research and technological advancement.
The Laboratory traces its origins to the 1980s, when pioneering research groups in optical science and modern communications were established at Shanghai University. It was among the earliest institutions in China to conduct research on optical fiber technologies and successfully developed China's first single-mode optical fiber in 1980, marking a significant milestone in the nation's optical communications research. Through decades of continuous development, the Laboratory has become one of China's leading research centers in specialty fiber optics and optical networking.
Today, the Laboratory focuses on three major research directions: specialty fiber theories and technologies, optical access networks and integrated service technologies, and specialty fiber devices and fiber optic sensing networks. Supported by multiple national and municipal research initiatives, it has established a strong multidisciplinary research environment that integrates optics, photonics, communications, information engineering, and intelligent technologies.
The Laboratory is committed to addressing fundamental scientific challenges and key technological issues while fostering high-level research talent and international collaboration. By pursuing scientific excellence and technological innovation, it aims to become a world-class research and education center in specialty fiber optics, fiber optic sensing networks, and optical communication networks, making significant contributions to the advancement of global photonics research and next-generation information technologies.
