Special Issue on Urban Climate Futures: AI and Smart City Solutions
Aims and Scope
Rapid urbanization and accelerating climate change are placing cities at the center of the global climate challenge. Urban areas are major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions while simultaneously facing increasing exposure to heatwaves, urban heat islands, flooding, air pollution, and other climate-related hazards.
Artificial intelligence (AI), digital twins, smart sensing, and data-driven urban technologies are creating new opportunities to understand, predict, and manage these challenges. These approaches can support climate-responsive urban planning, improve building and infrastructure performance, strengthen early-warning and adaptation systems, and enable more effective mitigation strategies.
This Special Issue invites original research, systematic reviews, perspectives, and case studies examining how AI and smart city technologies can contribute to climate mitigation, adaptation, and resilience at the building, neighborhood, and urban scales. Particular attention is given to studies that move beyond technological demonstration and provide measurable environmental performance, validated methods, real-world applications, or implications for urban policy and decision-making.

Submissions that pass pre-check will be reviewed by at least two reviewers of the specific field.
