Special Issue on Computational Intelligence and Digital Biomarkers for Early Detection of Cognitive Decline and Dementia
Aims and Scope
Alzheimer's disease and related dementias remain among the most pressing challenges of an ageing global population, yet conventional diagnostic biomarkers such as cerebrospinal fluid assays, PET imaging, and clinic-based cognitive testing are costly, invasive, episodic, and difficult to scale. Digital biomarkers derived from wearable sensors, smartphone interactions, speech and language, eye movement, gait, and passive behavioural monitoring offer a non-invasive, continuous, and low-cost alternative for detecting cognitive decline at its earliest, preclinical and prodromal stages. Realising this potential depends on advances at the intersection of computational engineering and cognitive science: robust signal processing, multimodal data fusion, interpretable machine-learning and deep-learning models, privacy-preserving on-device computation, and rigorous clinical validation.
This Special Issue invites original research and high-quality reviews on the design, modelling, validation, and deployment of computational systems that transform everyday sensing into reliable cognitive-health markers. We welcome contributions spanning algorithm development, system architecture, benchmarking, bibliometric and methodological surveys, and translational studies. By bringing together engineers, data scientists, cognitive scientists, and clinicians, the issue aims to consolidate methods, expose open challenges, and accelerate the path from sensor data to clinically actionable early detection of dementia.

Submissions that pass pre-check will be reviewed by at least two reviewers of the specific field.
