Abstract

This article explores the evolution of legged locomotion in both animals and robots, drawing parallels and contrasts between biological adaptation and technological innovation. It examines the transition from quadrupedal to bipedal motion in animals, highlighting the anatomical, neurological, and evolutionary challenges and advantages of bipedalism. In robotics, the development of both bipedal and quadrupedal walking machines is discussed, with attention to the engineering trade-offs, control strategies, and the influence of artificial intelligence (AI). The article analyzes key concepts such as gait cycles, stability, and the role of hardware and software, supported by mathematical models and schematic diagrams. By reflecting on philosophical perspectives and recent advances in AI-driven robotics, the commentary provides insights into the dynamic interplay between biology and engineering in the quest for agile, adaptive, and robust legged robots.
