Special Issue on The Role of Open Innovation and Information Technologies in Corporate Sustainability

Aims and Scope

Businesses need to become sustainable in a dynamic and evolving way. The challenge is to understand how companies can incorporate sustainability into their business. Progress in the market suggests that innovation is a means to enhance sustainability in business. The environmental awareness of economic actors has directed innovation towards sustainable development. Sustainability-oriented innovation enables the development of new products, management processes, and supply sources focused on environmental, social, and economic goals.
Enterprises should develop organizational capacities to address these challenges by incorporating external actors in sustainability-oriented innovation processes. Sustainability-oriented innovation through the collaborative approach can improve organizational performance by increasing market share and customer satisfaction. Open innovation practices in organizations have the potential to have a positive impact on both sustainability and innovation, due to the complementarity of knowledge and resources.
Information technology resources enable firms to develop sustainability capabilities, contribute to significantly reducing carbon emissions in the economy, and thus achieving more sustainable economic growth. Green information technology is an important component of sustainable operations management. This is because it covers activities such as recycling, energy management, data center management, server virtualization, environmental risk reduction and the use of renewable energy sources.
